The Volvo Penta MDI (Engine Data Interface) Unit, part number 23231607, is an essential component in modern Volvo Penta D1 and D2 engine systems. The MDI unit acts as the link between the engine and the various electrical and electronic components. It is responsible for the communication between the engine and the control panels, and allows you to monitor important engine information such as fault messages, temperatures and emergency alarms. Unfortunately, like any electronic component, the MDI unit can fail. In this blog post we will discuss the signs of a failing MDI unit, the various part numbers available, and which one you should purchase as a replacement.

What is the Volvo Penta MDI Unit?

The MDI unit is an electronic module that processes signals from the engine and communicates them to the steering and monitoring systems on board your boat. The MDI receives data from sensors and switches on the engine and sends it to the control panels and displays. This gives you insight into important engine functions such as RPM, oil pressure, engine temperature and other vital statistics. The MDI also helps diagnose engine problems by reading fault codes.

Signs of a Faulty MDI Unit

If the MDI unit starts to malfunction, several symptoms may occur. Some common signs of a malfunctioning MDI include:

1. No Response from the Start or Stop System

A common problem is that the engine starting system does not respond when you try to start the engine. The MDI is responsible for transmitting the start signal, a defective MDI can also cause the engine to not want to stop.

2. Warning and Error Messages on the Panel

Another common symptom is that you are receiving incorrect or no information from the control panel. This can range from false error messages to no engine data being displayed on the panel at all.

3. Erratic Engine Performance

If the engine suddenly begins to perform erratically with no apparent mechanical cause, the MDI unit is not communicating properly with the engine's sensors and systems. This can cause the engine to stop unexpectedly, be difficult to start, or run erratically.

4. Display Error Code EVC

Many engines equipped with an Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system may display error codes indicating a communication problem between the MDI and the EVC system. This could be a sign that the MDI unit is not functioning properly.

5. Loss of Electronic Functions

Electronic components that are normally controlled by the MDI, such as the fuel pump, may stop working if the MDI fails. This can result in total engine failure.

The mdi unit on my D1-30 serial #5102181863C is
22458451 W1720
Clearly this is faulty and dangerous!
It activated the starter motor at 4am with no intervention when in the marina , no wind, no swell, engine had not been run for 3 days…the water inlet was shut, had the engine started, it would have overheated and started a fire. This is a very serious fault! I need an explanation and resolution quickly.
Thanks
