Buildup in Your Boat Engine Cooling System? Here's How to Fix It with Barnacle Buster

Marine fouling in the cooling system is a common problem in marine engines, both direct and indirect cooled systems. The result? Overheating, reduced engine performance and in the worst case: engine damage. Fortunately, there is a simple and effective way to tackle this — with Barnacle Buster .

What exactly is Fouling?

Fouling, also known as “fouling,” occurs when marine organisms such as lime, algae, mussels, and other microorganisms settle in the cooling system. Over time, they form hard deposits that block or severely reduce flow.

Direct Cooled vs. Indirect Cooled Engines

Direct cooled engines use seawater directly to cool the engine. This means that fouling occurs directly in the engine block and cooling channels.

Indirectly cooled engines use a heat exchanger. Seawater flows through the heat exchanger to cool the coolant circuit. Fouling usually occurs in the heat exchanger itself, the aftercooler (if you have one), the seawater pump, the exhaust manifold or the connecting pipes.

In both cases, fouling can cause:

  • Poor cooling

  • Higher fuel consumption

  • Faster engine wear

  • Unexpected engine failures

How to remove growth? With Barnacle Buster!

Barnacle Buster is a biodegradable cleaner, specially developed for the safe removal of limescale and fouling deposits in the seawater circuit of boats. It does not corrode metals and is safer than aggressive acids such as hydrochloric acid.

Application is simple:

  1. Close the seawater circuit from outside (e.g. close the valve).

  2. Connect a circulation pump with a collection tank.

  3. Allow Barnacle Buster to circulate through the system (approx. 2 hours, depending on the level of contamination).

  4. Rinse with clean water .

You can also use it to clean heat exchangers or exhaust manifolds separately in an immersion bath.

How often should you clean?

For boats in salt or brackish water we recommend flushing the system with Barnacle Buster at least once per season . More frequent use or older engines may be necessary. For fresh water we recommend every 2 years.

Prevention is better than cure , but if you're already experiencing reduced cooling, Barnacle Buster is a quick and safe way to fix the problem — without having to take your engine apart.
